While the auctions at @gardnergalleries with multiple pieces of art by Floyd Kuptana are also online, @waddingtonsauctions today are offering TWO amazing sculptures for sale in their "Major Fall Auction: Inuit Art"
It seems odd that Waddington is only including Floyd Kuptana’s sculptures in the Indigenous and Inuit art auctions, while excluding his 2-D works. All his paintings, mixed media, and pastels are only offered in their “Discovery Art” section, as if they are unsure how to categorize them. Although not many Inuit artists create paintings like his, I believe his work should definitely be included in the Inuit auctions.
Check out the FOR SALE page for more images & details
28 October 2024
The catalogues of the two auctions, containing the remaining collection of Floyd Kuptana paintings of the Tane Gallery, are now available.
In the first session: 6 paintings, 1 pastel, 1 sculpture.
In the 2nd session: 13 paintings, 2 pastels, 1 collage.
In two other seperate auctions, another 5 works of art by Floyd will be auctioned.
In total for sale at Gardners right now:
29 (!)

Eron Boyd (artist, collector, former friend & collaborator) about this painting: "This was not one of my collection. It has the energy signature that Floyd usually enters. The two-headed wolf is of two minds: monster and sweetheart. The little one following, could be an apprentice, or friend. Someone to share his kill with. In Floyds case, it was usually wine.
His drinking buddies called themselves "The Regulators", from the Young Guns movie.

"Floyd shaved the bear, smoothed it, ran his hand across its back it, blew away some dust; turned it, worked it with his file, took the stone away a whisper at a time."
In: Union Station : love, madness, sex and survival on the streets of the new Toronto p.93 -96 Author: Joe Fiorito, 2006
(Source: Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/unionstationlove0000fior/unionstationlove0000fior
accessed August 27 2024)
...
Floyd Kuptana, an Inuk from Paulatuk or somewhere close enough to there, was carving at a workbench in a garage in the west end; so far in the west end as to be nearly off the city map.
His signature piece, a swimming polar bear. He moved around it with a rasp, soothing and smoothing, talking as he worked.
The bear, in mid-stroke, if mid-air were water. And then Floyd stopped carving and dusted himself off and lit a smoke.
He said, "How do you know Joe the Shoe?"
Hello, Joe, whaddya know.
Joe used to run the shoe repair shop in the theatre district, in a mall in the basement of Metro Hall. He is Italian, third generation like me. He did shoe repairs for all the musicals: Phantom, Cats, The Lion King.
Joe kept several Inuit carvings, including a remarkable swimming bear, in the window of his shop. I have lived in the north and am drawn to soapstone; bears are not what I am accustomed to seeing in the windows of shoe repair shops any-where, let alone in Toronto. But I was passing by and saw the bear and stopped to look, and then to talk, and I learned that Joe the Shoe and Floyd the Carver were pals.

One of Floyd´s returning themes are boats, but also boats with Sedna, either under it or integrated with the boat, or even Sedna being the boat.
Here I am sharing images of the 2010 "Glen Ness" -Sedna protecting the boat and passenger", with the 2007 famous -Sedna lamenting the loss of sea ice- from the collection of the MUSEUM of CONTEMPORARY CIRCUMPOLAR ART : Platform for Indigenous Peoples (previously Museum Cerny) in Bern, Switzerland
-------
This is the 11th of the „Glen Ness“ sculptures added to the album.
(38 images of 20 (!) sculptures were added to the Sculptures page to be described and documented. They will be posted on our socials one by one as we progress. Unfortunately we haven´t got much details, so maybe people can help out! Have you seen these, or do you own one or more, let us know.)
11. Untitled (Sedne protecting the boat and passenger….)
No date, no dimensions
Materials: stone, leather, inlay, hair, twigs/wood, bark
From the images we have, we identify 3 heads on the creature (Sedna, shaman) on its back, under the boat. One large one in front looking up, with a gaping mouth with fangs and teeth, a bone plug of course. markings / pins /tattoos of metal pins in circular form. I can´t see the second eye/socket, but I expect two eye empty eye sockets looking up, also part of the face that look forward out into the sea. That second face is not completely visible, but based on what I do see, it is certainly there.
The third face, from the front looks like a bear/wolf head, but from the side it turnes into somethings else.
The boat is resting on the stomach of the lying sea creature, which appears to have open ribs (to suggest malnutrition or starvation?)
With two arms the boat is held in place. The boat itself is a simple rowing boat, with a bench to sit on, a twigs as a mast, and bark for a sail.
On the top of the mast rests a small carved, wolf´s head.
Based on what the little figure in the boat is holding in its hands - an axe and spear- I would say that it is a hunter, with a strain of hair on top of the head, held by a tiny leather strap.
Look for yourself and compare!
Keywords:
- hunter
- leather strap
- string of hair
- Sedna (sea creature)
- boat (rowboat)
- axe & spear
- sail (bark)
-mast (twigs)

Our art warning & disclaimer have been updated.
Warning:
Given the unregulated nature of the art market, it is crucial to stay vigilant and always seek stringent provenance. In the past, we believe we have identified a number of allegedly fake paintings in Floyd Kuptana's style being sold as original works by him.
Our objective is to promote public awareness of Floyd Kuptana artworks while preventing the propagation of art fraud. As such, when we believe artworks purporting to be by Floyd Kuptana are not genuine or do not have secure provenance, if provenance cannot be verified, or if questions we raise cannot be resolved, such artworks will NOT be posted on this site or our affiliated social media.
In most countries, seeking a financial advantage through deception is a criminal act. Unfortunately, authorities are generally ill-equipped to detect and prevent art fraud. This is why you must always seek out evidence to obtain secure provenance.
As a potential buyer, you have the power to prevent art fraud. Query the vendor, their representatives or agents, and others who may have knowledge. If there's documentary evidence, secure it. In some cases, expert assistance may be needed to identify inconsistencies and disconformities between paintings in Floyd Kuptana’s style and securely provenanced Floyd Kuptana paintings.
Disclaimer:
No part of our commentary on Floyd Kuptana’s artwork is a recommendation to buy or investment advice. Despite our honestly held beliefs, we must (for legal reasons) expressly disclaim that reliance should be placed on our commentary or the fact of the inclusion of artworks on this site or our affiliated social media to infer authenticity. The late, Arctic-born, Toronto-based Inuit artist Floyd Kuptana ― best known as a carver ― in his 2-D works, made several hunting and gathering forays deep into distinctively American pop culture.

This is a non-commercial project of Inuit Art Portal with the intent to collect and share the works of Floyd Kuptana in one place, beginning with his sculptures. A long-term aim is to create a comprehensive catalogue of the artist's work.
We would like to acknowledge the help and support of Gallery Arcturus, a public art museum frequented by the artist and that has extensively shown his works. See current pieces on display in the section "Museums & Galleries" and via the Public Inuit Art Map.

The description mentions 2 bears, but it seems to me the more longer face -hoovering over the little bear, might be a spirit instead.
The stone looks like Italian alabaster. Both, the bear and the face have inlay eyes. The face is placed on a small metal rod in the round, curling part.

This mask contains the full works of Floyd Kuptana´s key elements on display. There is no symmetry whatsoever, and I am actually surprised he place some elements in the middle of the face ..... a red inlay circle with 2 metal pins, and one on the chin, it also has a remarkable nose, an element Floyd often not includes or only with some minor line----

38 images of 22 (!) sculptures were added to the Sculptures page to be described and documented. They will be posted on our socials one by one as we progress.
Unfortunately we haven´t got much details, so maybe people can help out! Have you seen these, or do you own one or more, let us know.
The first sculpture is a little brown dancing figure (shaman?) with a bear/wolf head. The figure is dressed, with shoes, pants and a coat and dances upright, arms in the air, as we have seen so many times in Floyd´s sculptures ánd paintings!

It has been two years since some tiny carvings by Floyd came for auction at Waddingtons. And it has been more than 3 years since anything of decent size was offered up for auction.
With this amazing sculpture being almost 50 cm long and 25 cm high, it is really heavy. At least that’s what the Waddingtons employee told me, after they lifted it to look underneath, on my request. They did not mention a date or a signature in the lot on the website. It said 2000 by Floyd Kuptana, Paulatuk. Hopefully they will add an extra image of it, and add the information to the lot.
Trying to describe all there is to see, is not an easy task!
I am counting 6 eyes, 3 faces, 3 mouths. It maybe part walrus, part shaman, part bird. Hence the title “Transforming Shaman”
The main part is lying on it’s back, with arms and hands holding shaman’s tools (drum stick and some sort of hammer?).
The body also has 2 fins. From the back, it looks like a bird with 2 wings, but it also has a scary but smiling face, 2 fangs, 3 teeth and the mandatory bone plug below the mouth. (The other 2 faces also have a bone plug, but above the mouth.)
The second face is looking up, with a fearful expression, with bulky eyeballs popping out and an open mouth (9 teeth)
On the opposite side of the sculpture, a very remarkable head (bear?) is looking forward, with one big centralized eye, a small mouth, only 3 teeth, a bone plug, 2 animal ears, and an impressive black mohawk on top of the head, plus -how odd- an extra eyeball, perched on a stick, sprouting from the back of the head like a surreal antenna.

Found last week on a weird webpage which apparently collected all kind of items signed by any "Floyd" , I found this unusual painting apparently by Floyd Kuptana, titled:
"Wendigo"
The page has this text: "By Artist Floyd Kuptana (1964 -). This is an original native Canadian oil painting. It is signed by contemporary Innu artist Floyd Kuptana. The art is titled "Wendigo" and it dates to circa 2017. The wendigo is part of the traditional belief system of a number of Algonquin-speaking peoples, including the Ojibwe, the Saulteaux, the Cree, the Naskapi, and the Innu."
It must have been listed on Ebay, as the watermark states, and the accompanying text:
"... sale since Monday, January 6, 2020.
This item is in the category "Art\Paintings". The seller is "danog-123" and is located in Blackstock, ON. This item can be shipped worldwide.
Size: Medium (up to 36in.: Signed Style: Abstract Listed By: Dealer or Reseller Painting Surface: Canvas Medium: Oil Features: Framed
Some of the texts are not correct. Floyd was not Innu, and the painting is obviously not framed, but hanging or standing agains some wired wall.
The painting is wild!
Signed with: Floyd Kuptana (only the 2nd painting signed with his full first name I have ever seen so far)
And the only one with the title on the front... but maybe there have been more, Ed Drass ?

Via Waddingtons the following paintings are on auction between Febr. 2nd and Febr. 8th
Remarkable is the painting of the almost iconic sculpture "Ball Room Dancer" from 2005 that was on the cover of IAQ Spring 2008 23-1 (Check it out on the His Life page)
It is very unusual to see a painting of one of his sculptures, by Floyd himself. I am not aware of any other.
According to the info from Waddington Discovery Art department, it comes from a person who knew Floyd personally, adn regularly bought his paintings. Floyd was then living in an apartment in the Parliament St. area n Toronto. There is no date given, but estimated to be no more than maybe 5 years old.UNTITLED (RED WOLF)

Floyd Kuptana usually signed his pieces in Roman script when there was space for it with his name, year and location Paulatuk, NW. In this case the appraisers must have made a mistake, because this is clearly a Floyd Kuptana, and not a Robert Kuptana.
This drum dancer from 2001, shows all signs of Floyd: the standing up figure, the shape of the feet, but mainly the head which could be an animal, person, shaman, spirit, dog or wolf.. Thát shape and the expression of it, is very recognisable. The one eye we can see, is cut out open, big and round. Add the string of probably horse hair. No, this is far away from sculptures Robert Kuptana usually makes. He makes mostly relatively small (in size) works of art. Unfortunately, we only were able to find one image of it. Maybe somebody with an Artnet subscription can share possible extra images, and maybe more details? Check Sculptures entry for more details!

“Spirit Faces” by Floyd Kuptana, 2004, 17 × 26 × 8cm, in the collection of the @wereldmuseum.leiden

Summary of the Zoom meeting coming up... (I forgot to record it ...)
Today I visited the stand of Canuit at the "Zweedse Kerstmark" ("Swedish Christmas market) at the Suikerfabriek, Groningen, the Netherlands. They are the only Dutch shop/home gallery for Inuit art.
Karel Stevens (who is actually the brother of Pierre Stevens, owner of UKPIK Art in Halifax, NS, Canada.) told me he had óne sculpture by Floyd in the past. He had picked it up in the North in one of the Co-operatives (check location)
It was sold to a Ducth collector Hans van Berkel, who -in 2015- donated his entire collection to the Wereldmuseum in Leiden. Their online collection mentions indeed a sculpture titles "Spirit Faces" by Floyd Kuptana, 2004, 17 × 26 × 8cm, but unfortunately no images due to copyright restrictions.

Time: 16:00 (4pm Eastern Standard Time) -- ONLINE EVENT: Link to the online event: ZOOM
#projectfloydkuptana is an initiative by Inuit Art Portal, with help and support from Gallery Arcturus, Toronto.
The goal of the project is to ensure Floyd Kuptana will be known by a larger audience, for now and in the future, gathering and sharing his works in one place -- with an initial focus on his sculptures.
Guus van den Brekel (@InuitArtPortal) and Ed Drass(@GalleryArcturus) will introduce the project, the progress so far and how it may evolve in the future.
Get an early peek at: https://floydkuptana.ca
Please forward this invite to anyone who might like it!
Hope to see you on Friday, December 8th!

A mask by Floyd is shown on the his profile page at Galerie Images Boréales . Unfortunately, we don´t know ány details, so if you know more about it, or you have more images of it, please let us know!
It is a typical Floyd Kuptana mask, probably called "Shaman Transformation", with a few characteristic Floyd elements:

two animal ears (open)
one eye-socket empty
one eye-ball bulking out
long slim nose
mouth with double fangs ánd teeth
