Notes: Kuptana's sculptural works are deeply rooted in Inuit beliefs, culture and traumatic events that have shaped Inuit life. The comical, animated bear is a subject synonymous with Kuptana's work and it is through humour that Kuptana is able to bring light to important issues. From an early age, he assisted his cousins, Francis and Abraham Anghik Ruben as well as Bill Nasogaluak with their sculptures. He apprenticed under David Ruben Piqtoukun. This sculpture, as told by the artist to the current owner, is a story about climate change. Prophetically, Kuptana could see the effects climate change was having on the environment. This piece as described by Kuptana was a way of envisioning the survival of polar bears. The sculpture depicts a polar bear stealing - a concept in itself foreign to the Inuit - an umiak in order to get across to the rocky offshore islands where the walrus and seals conglomerated. Due to ice melt the polar bears' future was threatened as there would no longer be ice to connect the mainland to these islands.

The arms hold the drum and the stick.

1. The first sculpture is a little brown dancing figure (shaman?) with a bear/wolf head. The figure is dressed, with shoes, pants and a coat and dances upright, arms in the air, as we have seen so many times in Floyd´s sculptures ánd paintings!

2. Untitled (Feathered Mask)

This mask contains the full works of Floyd Kuptana´s key elements on display. There is no symmetry whatsoever, and I am actually surprised he place some elements in the middle of the face (a red inlay circle with 2 metal pins, and one on the chin)
It also has a remarkable nose, an element Floyd often not includes or only with some minor line.

With this amazing sculpture being almost 50 cm long and 25 cm high, it is really heavy. At least that’s what the Waddingtons employee told me, after they lifted it to look underneath, on my request. They did not mention a date or a signature in the lot on the website. It said 2000 by Floyd Kuptana, Paulatuk. Hopefully they will add an extra image of it, and add the information to the lot.
Trying to describe all there is to see, is not an easy task!
I am counting 6 eyes, 3 faces, 3 mouths. It maybe part walrus, part shaman, part bird. Hence the title “Transforming Shaman”
The main part is lying on it’s back, with arms and hands holding shaman’s tools (drum stick and some sort of hammer?).
The body also has 2 fins. From the back, it looks like a bird with 2 wings, but it also has a scary but smiling face, 2 fangs, 3 teeth and the mandatory bone plug below the mouth. (The other 2 faces also have a bone plug, but above the mouth.)
The second face is looking up, with a fearful expression, with bulky eyeballs popping out and an open mouth (9 teeth)
On the opposite side of the sculpture, a very remarkable head (bear?) is looking forward, with one big centralized eye, a small mouth, only 3 teeth, a bone plug, 2 animal ears, and an impressive black mohawk on top of the head, plus -how odd- an extra eyeball, perched on a stick, sprouting from the back of the head like a surreal antenna.

The polar bear is the most important animal according to the Inuit. He reigns as king on the ice floe. One of the Inuit legends says that the Inuk hopes to reincarnate as a bear in his next life. When his spirit finally reincarnates into a bear, it is filled with such immense happiness that it begins to dance.

This shaman´s mask shows us part human, part animal head. It contains many of Floyds favorite features. One animal ear, one human ear, 1 open eye and 1 bulking eye, markings under one eye, a string of hair on top of the head, a wide open mouth with a bone plug (labret).
Less common is the white inlay circle plus the stripes. You will see different expressions depending of which angle you are seeing it.

Maskette on Base, 1999
stone, antler, and red inlay, 9.25 x 5 x 3 in (23.5 x 12.7 x 7.6 cm)
signed, inscribed, and dated, "Floyd / Kuptana / Paulatuk / NWT / 1999".
Provenance: Private Collection, France.
Floyd Kuptana often drew inspiration from the stories and myths told in his hometown of Paulatuuq, and frequently depicted spiritual and physical transformations in his work. He was also known for his mask sculptures, many appearing to be caught between one form to the next, as can be seen by this Maskette. A single pupil peers off to the side, underlined by inlaid stone dots to mirror the carved lines on the opposite side. The single horn in the forehead and the stone line of "hair" give the work the feel of being at once a human, animal and monster.

Shaman, Transformation & Drum Dancers
12 THE OUTSIDER End of page 7.
Floyd Kuptana (Canadian, b. 1964), Shaman, 1991. Brazilian soapstone and bone with stone and metal inlay. 5 x 5 x 5 in.
Photo: Robert W. Switzer.
--------------------------------------------
The sculpture titled Shaman is a 5 x 5 x 5 inch brown stone carving of a small mask or face, resting on the chin. The face has two horns and a small, almost round mouth with no lips. The eyes are strikingly different: one is a large open socket, which shows some extra teeth on the back, on what most likely is another face of some sort, that we are unable to see. The other eye socket is filled with a bulking eye. The expression on the face is of anguish or fear, scared or shocked even, by what it saw. The sculpture is made of Brazilian soapstone, bone, and metal inlay. The artist, Floyd, often creates faces with two (or more) different sides, mostly adding different features to the left or the right side of the face. It might visualize a transformation, from human to animal or spirit.
Here are the keywords that describe the sculpture:
Shaman head/mask
Face(s)
Mouth (small, oval/round, extended a little, but no lips)
Teeth (2 rows, sharp)
Bone plug (labret)
Bags (or markings on cheek)
Nose (long straight, 2 small holes as nostrils)
Eyes (one large open, one closed with eyeball and pupil)
Horns (2)

Floyd Kuptana usually signed his pieces in Roman script when there was space for it with his name, year and location Paulatuk, NW. In this case the appraisers must have made a mistake, because this is clearly a Floyd Kuptana, and not a Robert Kuptana.
This drum dancer from 2001, shows all signs of Floyd: the standing up figure, the shape of the feet, but mainly the head which could be an animal, person, shaman, spirit, dog or wolf.. Thát shape and the expression of it, is very recognisable. The one eye we can see, is cut out open, big and round. Add the string of probably horse hair. No, this is far away from sculptures Robert Kuptana usually makes. He makes mostly relatively small (in size) works of art. Unfortunately, we only were able to find one image of it. Maybe somebody with an Artnet subscription can share possible extra images, and maybe more details?
This one is: 27.3 x 8.9 x 11.4 cm. (10.7 x 3.5 x 4.5 in.)

“With a height of 18 inches (almost 46 cm), this is a large standing man with widespread arms, but there is nothing common about him! I don’t know if shamans can actually transform into multiple entities at the same time or in phases, but this figure has 4 faces in total that I can identify. It has bear feet and one hand holds what looks like a stick or tool, perhaps one of the many shaman’s tools they use. The end of the other arm is carved as a whale’s head with two inlaid eyes and a small stripe as a mouth. From a distance, you might think there is a bird’s head on its shoulder, but a closer look shows a small head facing up, with carved and inlaid eyes, a nose, a small line as a mouth, including a bone plug. The main head was shaped to show two faces, depending on the angle you look at the head. Together with the shoulder face, the faces cover looking left, right, and very importantly, upwards into the sky. Clearly, one face is like a walrus with fangs and a few teeth, two large bulky eyes, and two tiny nostrils. The one looking up seems terrified with a large oval mouth and the same bulky eyes that seem to pop out, a nose, markings or bags under one eye, and again, a bone plug.

“Spirit Faces” by Floyd Kuptana, 2004, 17 × 26 × 8 cm, in the collection of the Wereldmuseum Leiden, The Netherlands @wereldmuseum.leiden
Description by ChatGPT (Bing: This sculpture appears to be an abstract representation, possibly of a face with exaggerated features mounted on a triangular base. It is made of two primary components: an abstract stone-carverd piece and a dark, triangular base. The stone piece has a wavy structure, resembling an elongated face with hollow eyes and an extended nose or beak. It is supported by a thin metal rod that connects it to the base, giving the impression that it is floating or in motion. The base has a marbled texture and its dark color contrasts with the lighter tone of the carved piece. The overall design gives off an artistic and modern vibe.
